Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Building, the VP Operations is responsible for directing the operations of the Ottawa Business Unit including profit/loss responsibilities. The incumbent will also be responsible for securing and the development of Carillion’s projects, cultivating relationship with internal and external stakeholders, coaching and mentoring staff, and ensuring that industry and departmental standards are met and overall performance efficiencies improved.

Responsibilities: 
  • Leads the operations and ensures financial viability of the Ottawa Business Unit by winning large projects
  • Ensures the Business Unit follows group’s policies, procedures and corporate strategy
  • Enhances policies and procedures to cater to local requirements if necessary
  • Ensures safe working practices on sites and in the office
  • Develops a local marketing strategy; reviews and confirms the strategy with the Senior Vice President, Building, and then implements it
  • Oversees all estimating and procurement activities
  • Manages relationship with insurance and bonding company
  • Ensures contracts, insurance and bonds are properly set-up
  • Oversees field operations to ensure projects are delivered successfully, creating profit for the company
  • Sources human resources for the local business unit and performs HR duties
  • Holds regular staff meetings
  • Manages labour relations locally
  • Cultivates relationships with industry associations
  • Implements and maintains IT/reporting systems
  • Submits reports to the Senior Vice President, Building on regular basis
  • Attends group meetings as required
  • Manages subordinates that may include Project Directors, Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Safety Managers, Chief Estimator, Senior Estimators, Estimators, and Administrative Support
  • Provides assistance to Managers and other Carillion Canada business units as required, e.g. for estimates, CM proposals, business development, promotional events, industry associations, labour relations, etc.
  • Other special duties as assigned.
Requirements: 
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in securing and overseeing operations of large and complex (ICI) institutional, commercial, and industrial construction projects preferably in health care and post-secondary educational sectors.
  • Experience in management of projects, budgets, and people in construction field.
  • Relevant education from a recognized college/university pertaining to the construction industry is required
  • MBA degree would be an asset
  • Highly developed verbal, written and presentation skills to build differentiated relationships with customers and their influencers/stakeholders
